When a young detective is ambushed in a failed police stake out, he is believed to have been killed. In reality, he revives and learns that his face has been altered and his identity has been changed to Micheal Knight. The person responsible for this is Wilton Knight, a dying billionare who, convinced that one man can make a difference, has selected Micheal for the role as a crime-fighter. Now armed with a advanced car called KITT which has the equivalent armor of a battle tank, capable of speeds over 300 MPH and contains an artificial intelligence computer personality as an aide, Micheal agrees to perform his assigned role. Arriving at his Army base, they hear he was killed in a car crash. Posing as insurance agent, Michael proves it was no accident. Devon's fear she's targeted to prevent her stopping an environment-disastrous bill by senator Forbes and his powerful supporters. Devon Miles is arrested on a traffic violation in Lyndhurst Flats and ends up sharing a jail with Frank Reston, the very journalist he was planning to meet. When Reston is killed by the corrupt police officers because he had too much evidence against them, Devon's life becomes forfeit as he was the last one to see Reston alive. A young woman named Mikki overhears the conspirators' plot to assassinate El Presidente and is thrown off a cliff. Michael manages to rescue Mikki, though she ends up with temporary amnesia. Michael infiltrates the 'Corazónes de Piedras' who are dealing in the Nun X-19, a powerful new automatic assault weapon. Unfortunately he 'misplaces' the money he is to use to obtain the X-19.

Michael and Kitt enter the Alternative 2000, a cross country race for cars that run on alternative fuel. They are there to find a saboteur, not to win, but find themselves having to rescue nosy reporter Liberty Cox in each lap.

Michael is investigating the death of glamor magazine Escape publisher Phillip Royce who had contacted the Foundation to expose a story he referred to only under the codename 'Topaz'.

Michael fails to apprehend a counterfeiter. He then accompanies Devin to a town which is supposedly, the town with lowest crime rate. While there Michael sees the man he was pursuing. He tells Devin, who finds it hard to believe and the Sheriff is not very helpful because he is working with the man. Michael picks up s woman. While they spend the night in a motel, someone comes into the room with a gun. Michael defends himself and kills the man. The woman disappears. When the police arrive it's difficult for Michael to prove his version of what happened. Devon tells him that there will be an investigation into his past which they know is sketchy. So Michael has to find the woman so that she could tell them it was self-defense.
