After waving off his good friend Amanda, jazz-loving young vicar Sidney Chambers is just in time to officiate at the funeral of solicitor Stephen Staunton, who shot himself. Sidney comforts the widow Hildegard, who plans to return to her native Germany but is then approached by Pamela Morton, wife of Stephen's partner, who claims Stephen would not have killed himself as they were planning to run away together. Sidney informs inspector Geordie Keating, and between them they unmask the killer. Sidney's success is marred by the news that Amanda, whom he secretly loves, has got engaged to another man. Barely able to conceal his disappointment Sidney attends Amanda's engagement party to stuffy Guy Hopkins. His sister Jennifer brings her boyfriend, black jazz musician Johnny Johnson, and, when the engagement ring goes missing, bitchy Lilian Calthorpe leads some of the other guests in accusing Johnny. Next day Lilian is found dead and her jewellery discovered in Johnny's bag. Sidney is not convinced of his guilt and points Geordie towards Lilian's husband William as a likely suspect. Aided by new curate Leonard Finch Sidney and Geordie discover how Lilian died, linking it to the theft of the ring, solving the case in time for Sidney's birthday. Written by don @ minifie-1

Upset that Amanda wants him to marry her to Guy Sidney hits the bottle but recovers in time to welcome new curate Leonard. He visits elderly Daisy Livingstone, who tells him that she thinks Arthur Evans, her daughter Isabel's boyfriend, is trying to kill her and later she does die but seemingly of natural causes and is cremated before a post mortem can take place. Daisy's sister Gladys - to whom she left everything - tells Sidney Daisy wanted to be buried and then Gladys also dies and Geordie arrests Arthur, who stands to gain from the deaths, though he protests his innocence. After Sidney has rescued Marion Taylor from a house fire her husband Dominic accuses pub landlord Tobias Hall of arson and soon afterwards Dominic is murdered. Hall denies murder but admits to blackmailing Dominic, a closet homosexual, an act which indirectly caused the fire. Geordie investigates the murder though Sidney feels he should be at home with his sick baby. Another row erupts between the two men when Geordie arrests Dominic's young lover Ben and Sidney believes that he is motivated purely by homophobic prejudice. Fortunately Sidney works out who the real killer is and helps Geordie trap him before the detective returns to find his child has recovered and Sidney entertains Hildegard Stanton, who has returned from Germany. Sidney takes Geordie to London where, as guests of Sidney's sister Jennifer, they visit the jazz club owned by her boyfriend Johnny's father Archie. Halfway through the evening Johnny's sister Claudette is murdered. She was about to elope with her lover Walter, who accuses Archie, an arrogant man, who brings in his friend inspector Williams, whom Geordie suspects to be corrupt. Indeed twelve years earlier Williams arrested Archie on suspicion of murder but released him. Archie believes that Claudette's slaying was revenge for those far off events and Sidney and Geordie set out to find the avenger. In the meantime Sidney feels guilty for having spent the night in the bed of glamorous vocalist Gloria and Guy, aware of the young vicar's attraction to Amanda, tells him that the wedding will now be in London. Police constable Jones is murdered and a witness hears the killer say Merlin, leading Sidney and Geordie to the Merlin factory, where Geordie is also shot though Sidney believes the gunman mistook him for his real intended victim. Helped by Mrs Maguire and Leonard Sidney discovers that the actual and intended victims served in the same unit in the war and, whilst their commanding officer, Heath, is unhelpful, his nervous wife gives Sidney the names of other ex-soldiers. One of them, Robert Miller, tells Sidney about Spreenhagen, the site where Heath's men murdered unarmed German prisoners of war. The killer is clearly out to avenge them and, defying the inept and bullying inspector Benson, Sidney cracks the case, visiting the recovering Geordie to tell him the result.
