Critic Reviews

An 8.7 rating?? Oh Joy! Another one of those rare finds? I sure hope so! YAY!!!!! I mean, who doesn't LOVE those? Those few exceptions to the rules. Those small films which seem to actually benefit in highly creative ways due to a small budget, are like a breath of fresh air, combined with hope for the future, and a pretty little babbling brook of restored faith. Oh how very! How brilliant to find, as rare as they might be, those films which defy the norm.

So with the tiny budget, D-list actors, and ridiculously high rating, I assumed it was one of those excellent anomalies.

Nope! Hilariously, between my seeing it listed here, and finally watching it a week later, the rating has dropped to 3.8. Seems that the crew and those associated with this film were driving up the rating.

The differences in acting ability within many scenes was noteworthy. Seems the director, like many of this type, really can't tell the difference. The lead female was cast based on what? Her body? Certainly not her shocking lack of acting skills. Some of the scenes made you cringe in the most horrible way possible, that putrid one-two punch combination of dreadful acting with painfully bad delivery, paired with student level writing. The scenes with the Monika character speaking with the male lead are bordering on unintentional comedy. Who writes like that? Well, this guy does.

"The film is a violent, edgy ride" Oh? It is? If edgy means lacking any type of entertaining: narrative, character, storyline, editing, and photographic originality on any level, then it is indeed edgy.

This film is little more then a badly written, directed, cast, and acted emulation of other people's films. And like many other films of this flavor, it was made for no reason other then, well, it could be. It's not a story which was simply burning to be told.

Which brings us to a concept which is now spoken about, thankfully, more often lately then in the past, which relates not only to film, but pretty much all areas. Those who might conceivably do the best job, write the most applause-worthy scripts, and contribute in memorable ways to the art/history of film, are not the people who end up skillfully and tirelessly maneuvering themselves into the writer/directors chair. Hyper-enthusiasm, paired with average skills, married to extreme drive, sprinkled with brilliant networking, and a side dipping sauce of shameful emulation skills...will make up for a lack of actual talent nearly every time. Sort of like politicians, eh? The right person for that job will never BE the sort of person who will do the countless distasteful things needed to even be considered.

This films massive rating drop clearly shows that viewers are not nearly as ignorant as producers like these appear to assume. But, there is a never-ending flow of these films. You'd think they would attempt to step up their game, seeing as how even children can smell a fake, unlike a few decades ago. But "they" don't.

And don't misunderstand. No one, except the most pretentious piggies, want to see ridiculous attempts at extreme art cinema (see: Matthew Barney). But neither do viewers desire the insults which films like this one lay on in heavy doses. Ratings show this. Viewers know this. Grandparents know this. Hell, DOGS know this. Who doesn't? Yet, these films continue.

Even "style over substance" is sometimes (nearly) acceptable. But when even the 'style' in that equation is pathetic, what do you have? Poop du jour.
