Critic Reviews

When you look at companies such as Criterion and the BFI, you will notice they lavish their DVD/Blu ray releases with extra's often created by people with a real knowledge/love of the title in question. Thankfully, many cult movie specialists have also embraced the format with similar enthusiasm from those in the know: whose passion about their subject is almost infectious....

This isn't one of them. For this is yet another Calum Waddell/High Rising Production. Groan, you would have thought that the cannibal genre would have been at least one sub-genre safe from this sadly prolific "career journalist" who only makes/writes about films in order to see his own name in print.

You may be familiar with the director of this work already from his Firelight Shocks website days: where he wrote self serving reviews ridiculing fans of HG Lewis, Joe D'Amato and the Cannibal film (in particular Cannibal Holocaust). Or maybe you are more familiar with his writing for Darkside, such as issue #118's interview with Ruggero Deodato, which in the words of one reader: "opens with a self-serving and arrogant attack on the film and anyone who has an appreciation for it." Other's may remember him from his bile filled vitriolic rants on website forums, which can still be found archived on some websites (several of which he was banned from for abusing horror film fans for liking - you guessed it, cannibal movies amongst other things).

"I'm after every original print of Cannibal Holocaust so I can burn the lot!" is not a quote from Mary Whitehouse, but the pro-James Ferman cannibal film documentary maker Calum Waddell. "The turtle scene has the incredible effect of making me violent - very violent indeed. Who says movies cannot make me people aggressive? One of the worst films ever made." Yet, despite these protests, when handed a cheque by 88 Films, Arrow or Grindhouse releasing, Calum seems to forget all about his moral objections for these "very amateurish" cannibal movies which he has no desire to see ever again during his lifetime. But hey, what else would you expect from someone who, in the words of another genre writer, passed himself off as "an expert in Asian cinema" after being given access to an in-development website by said writer, despite showing a contempt for all Asian cinema that was "beyond immature..." Personally, if I want to see a documentary about cult movies I will watch one made by somebody who knows what they are on about and shows respect for the films and their fans. Not some career journalist who thinks it is OK to impersonate fans of those films he personally dislikes, in order to post sick and twisted fantasies complete with said persons contact details, with the intention of encouraging hate mail...As anyone from those websites from which he was banned will probably tell you.
