Ragnar supports King Horik in his land dispute with Jarl Borg. Rollo, seeking to differentiate himself from his brother, supports Borg. In the ensuing battle, Ragnar and Horik are victorious and Borg settles his dispute and accepts a promise to be included in their next raid on England. Ragnar returns home with his brother in chains but the Lawgiver spares his life. He decides to leave the village but Siggy Haraldson convinces him to stay. Ragnar's wife Lagertha learns of his tryst with Princess Auslag who arrives at the village unexpectedly. She is also visibly pregnant. Ragnar feels compelled to care for Auslag and their unborn child and Lagertha leaves. Young Bjorn must choose as well. Written by garykmcd

With the Norsemen having arrived in Wessex, King Ecbert begins preparations to face them. Ragnar and his raiders attack Winchester and easily defeat the soldiers there. They quickly get control of the monastery and Athelstan knows exactly where to find the treasure. In the scriptorium, he kills a monk and while Horek brutalizes Bishop Swithern, Ragnar lets a young boy live. Lagertha has remarried but her marriage is troubled as Bjorn does not get along with his stepfather. Meanwhile, Auslag has given birth to another son and a prophecy seems to have come true. Jarl Borg remarries and announces his attention to seize all of Ragnar's lands. When Borg attacks, Rollo takes charge of defending Kattegat. Written by garykmcd

Rollo, Aslaug and the others who escaped Jarl Borg's attack on Kattegat arrive in a remote area with poor living conditions. In Kattegat, Borg makes it clear that he is now in charge and that his word is the law. He visits the Seer who tells him what he wants to hear. In Wessex, King Ecbert agrees to meet Ragnar provided they agree to exchange hostages beforehand. Ecbert offers his son Aethelwolf. Ragnar expresses his interest in acquiring land while Ecbert sees the raiders as potential warriors who could assist him in his own territorial ambitions. Before the talks can go any further Ragnar learns of what has happened in Kattegat and immediately returns home where he is quickly reunited with Aslaug and his children. When word reaches Lagertha of what's happened she and Bjorn also want to help. Back in Wessex the Vikings, their forces depleted by Ragnar's departure, come under attack. Even with the additional warriors from Lagertha's new home, Ragnar and Rollo realize they are still outnumbered. Ragnar decides to destroy their winter food supplies to draw out Jarl Borg. He and Bjorn set the grain stores on fire. The ensuing battle is bloody but Ragnar returns to Kattegat victorious. With the battle won, both Bjorn and Lagertha must decide whether to stay or return to their home. In Wessex, Athelstan recovers from his wounds and seems to be gaining the confidence of King Ecbert. King Horik returns from Wessex with only one boat and his forces severely depleted. He tells Ragnar that Athelstan was killed in battle. He convinces Ragnar that they need to make peace with Jarl Borg as they need both his boats and his warriors if they want any hope of raiding Wessex. Rollo is sent to convince Borg to come to Kattegat. Siggy continues to act as a spy for Horik, saying she does so for Rollo. Bjorn takes an interest in a servant girl, Porunn. Lagertha has returned to her home only to face the wrath of her new husband. After a drunken feast, she is severely beaten by his men. In Wessex, King Ecbert entrusts Athelstan with a great secret. Ragnar agrees to King Horik's request that he not execute Jarl Borg until they find a new ally. Floki learns from Helga he is to become a father and he suggests that they marry. He refuses to invite Ragnar however and his ill will towards his Earl becomes obvious. Aslaug is worried about her current pregnancy. The seer tells Ragnar that Athelstan is still alive. Ragnar receives word of a possible new ally but Rollo is suspicious, not having heard of this particular Earl. Ragnar is in for a surprise in store. King Aelle of Northumbria arrives in Wessex and King Ecbert proposes a marriage between his eldest son, Ethelwolf and Aelle's daughter Judith. Written by garykmcd

Aslaug gives birth to a son but his physical disabilities leads Ragnar to a difficult decision. In Wessex, King Ecbert welcomes Princess Kwenthrith of Mercia. After they arrive in Wessex, Ragnar informs Horik and Lagertha that they will negotiate with Egbert rather than fight. It doesn't sit well with them that Ragnar has made this decision without consulting them. Horik decides to do something about it. Written by garykmcd

Following the attack on King Ecbert's soldiers, King Horik pushes for a full-scale attack. Ragnar realizes he now has little choice but believes negotiation is the only solution. They proceed to battle with Horik arrogantly believing it can only end in victory. Ecbert is ready for them however. Thanks to Athelstan's translation of ancient Roman scripts, he uses their battle tactics and scores a decisive victory. Someone close to Ragnar is severely injured and taken prisoner. A truce is negotiated, as Raganar had predicted. Athelstan is offered a choice. Back in Kattegat, Auslag makes Porunn a free woman. Written by garykmcd

Life in Kattegat seemingly goes on normally. Floki and Helga have a daughter though Helga isn't too keen on the name he chooses for her. Bjorn continues to pursue Porunn but she tells him that as she is now a free woman, she can make her own choices. Ragnar continues to explore Athelstans belief system. King Horik's wife and younger children arrive in Kattegat but it soon becomes clear that he is plotting against Ragnar. Horik demands proof of Floki's loyalty, and he complies. Horik tells Siggy that her task will be to kill Ragnar's young sons. As more of Horik's warriors arrive, it appears that Ragnar has been caught out. Not quite so, however. Written by garykmcd
